Sweet Potato Millet Porridge

Ingredients

  • Millet3/4 cup
  • Water3 cups
  • Plant milk (almond, oat or coconut) or dairy milk1–2 cups, divided
  • Sweet potato, peeled and cut into small cubes1 cup
  • Cinnamon stick1–2
  • Cinnamon powder1/2–1 tsp
  • Ginger powder (optional)1/4–1/2 tsp
  • Ghee or coconut oil1–2 tsp
  • Shredded coconut (optional)1 tbsp
  • Honey or maple syrup (optional)1–2 tsp
  • Saltpinch

Method

  1. 1

Place water and 1 cup of the milk in a medium saucepan and bring just to a boil.

  2. 2

Add rinsed millet, sweet potato cubes and cinnamon stick(s). Reduce heat to medium-low, cover mostly, and cook 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes.

  3. 3

Check consistency. If too dry, add more milk or water by the tablespoon. Continue cooking 5–10 minutes until millet is soft and sweet potato is tender and beginning to break down.

  4. 4

Stir in ghee or coconut oil, remaining spices, and optional shredded coconut. Cook 1–2 more minutes.

  5. 5

Remove cinnamon sticks. Serve warm with a splash of extra milk, a drizzle of honey or maple if desired, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Ayurvedic rationale

Traditionally used as a flexible porridge that can support Vata, Pitta or Kapha depending on the fats and spices used. Millet is light and dry — classically favoured for Kapha. Sweet potato is sweet, moist and grounding — favoured for Vata and cooling for Pitta. Together they form a tridoshic base that can be adjusted: more ghee and coconut for Vata, milder spices and coconut oil for Pitta, less oil with extra ginger and pepper for Kapha. Warm, well-cooked porridge is classically preferred in the morning to kindle agni gently.

Nutrition notes

Nutritionally, this combines complex carbs and fibre from millet with beta-carotene and minerals from sweet potato for steady morning fuel. Millet supplies complex carbohydrates, fibre, protein and minerals (magnesium, phosphorus, manganese). Sweet potato is rich in beta-carotene, fibre and potassium.
