Fruit & food combining
Not every fruit pairs with every other fruit. Ayurveda and naturopathic tradition group them into four families — mixing across families can slow digestion and create the heavy, fermenting feeling after meals.
Sub-acid fruits
Play well with either sweet OR acid fruits — not both at once.

A few universal combining rules
- • Eat fruit alone, ideally on an empty stomach.
- • Don't mix fruit with dairy, meat, eggs or beans.
- • Melons — always alone.
- • Avoid iced drinks with meals — they dampen agni (digestive fire).
- • Wait 20-30 minutes after fruit before your next food group.
Traditional wisdom. Modern gastroenterology confirms different food groups empty from the stomach at different rates, which is part of why classical combining rules can feel gentler on digestion.
